EXPERIENCE JAPAN PICTOGRAMS –

Sam:

Daigo Daikoku :

Daigo Daikoku :Emoji

Daigo Daikoku :

Sam:EXPERIENCE JAPAN PICTOGRAMS

Sam: What is the biggest challenge in this project?

Daigo Daikoku: Biggest challenge was how we convey the values of EXPERIENCE JAPAN PICTOGRAMS as an initiative project for people of all cultures and ages to enhance their tourism experience in Japan.

Pictograms are usually used by people who work in design fields such as wayfinding design, editorial design and web design. However EXPERIENCE JAPAN PICTOGRAMS are for all people all over the world, so we needed to curate(explain) the concept simply and clearly, and make people want to use these pictograms.

Sam: When you create the icon system, what is the most important rule in your opinion ?

Daigo Daikoku: I believe to achieve both function and aesthetics. Function means visibility and distinctiveness. Aesthetic means to control shapes, lines, and margins to create a consistent look and feel and uniqueness of the pictograms .

Sam: In your opinion, what is the difference between an icon and emoji ?

Daigo Daikoku: Emoji is more emotional and specific rather than pictogram(icon).

Pictograms(icin) have to be able to be understood by everyone, not just by individual likes and dislikes.

Sam: You have been living in the US for a while, what do you think about the icon system in the US ? What is the difference between Japan and the US ?

Daigo Daikoku: I have felt that there are not as many pictograms in the US as I had expected. Neither is better or worse, but I think it is interesting that the US tends to explain directly with sentences. Pictograms are needed understanding its meaning at the first of all, It may be difficult because of the existence of diversity in the US.  I really love the pictograms and design system of the national park in the US.

Sam: Experience Japan Pictograms create various icons to support tourist experience. So, What is next ?

Daigo Daikoku:In terms of the next step of Experience Japan Pictograms, we would like to have many specific case studies used by users. Then we would like to work with the tourism industry. Experience Japan Pictograms are an initiative project as having mission “support tourism in Japan from a visual design perspective,” but I regard that is not only just free pictograms but also the seed that has the potential to connect the next business.
